George R. Brown, two-time Wayne State scoring leader, ranks fifth on the all-time basketball scoring list with 1,044 points. For three seasons, he led WSU in rebounding. His 953 rebounds ranks him third on the all-time rebound list.
Brown led WSU to two National Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament invitations. He won five letters for Wayne State including two in track. He was a two-time President Athletic Conference high jump champion in 1956 and 1957.
He continued his basketball playing days in the professional league with the Minneapolis Lakers in 1958, when he was one the first black players signed to an NBA contract.
He also taught in the Detroit Public System.
