The Wayne State men's fencing team had a rough day at the NYU Invitational Saturday, losing four of its five matches. The Warriors defeated Stevens Tech 14-13 in its final match of the day after losing to Saint John's (18-9), NYU (21-6), Columbia (15-12) and Yale (17-10).

Slava Zingerman, Jakub Gibczynski and Tim Mulligan led Wayne State in their respective weapons. Fresh off an appearance in last weekend's North American Cup competition, Zingerman was a perfect 13-0 Saturday in epee matches.

Gibczynski meanwhile paced the sabre squad with a 13-2 record and Mulligan had seven wins, the most wins of any Warrior in foil matches.

WSU will be back in action next weekend at the Northwestern Dual Meet.

Saint John's 18, Wayne State 9

Saint John's 18-9 victory over Wayne State came thanks in part to five, 5-4 decisions going its way. Overall, the men's sabre team lost 5-4 with Gibczynski leading the way with a 3-0 record.

Mulligan grabbed two wins in foil competition, but the Warriors would fail to get another victory, losing 7-2. Saint John's ended the contest with a 6-3 win in the epee. True to form, Zingerman was 3-0 for WSU. Robert Neda lost a pair of close matches 5-4, 5-4.

NYU 21, Wayne State 6

Gibczynski and Zingerman both obtained two wins each in sabre and epee bouts respectively, but it wasn't enough to defeat NYU as the day's hosts bested the Warriors 21-6. Neda and Joe Fresard earned WSU's other two points in epee bouts. NYU claimed 7-2, 9-0 and 5-4 wins in sabre, epee and foil matches.

Columbia 15, Wayne State 12

In one of its closest matches of the day, Wayne State lost to Columbia 15-12 after being beat in all three disciplines 5-4.

After losing his first match, Gibczynski came on strong in the sabre to steal his last two bouts 5-1 and 5-0. Demetrius Dixon and Andrew Opalewski both had 5-3 wins vs. Columbia as well.

Columbia's foil squad won three of the first four points before WSU turned the tables to take three points of its own, but Columbia gained a deciding 5-0 win in the weapons' final match. Mulligan (foil) was 2-1 vs. Columbia.

Things seemed to be going Wayne State's way in its epee matches as the Warriors won the first four points. However, Columbia achieved a remarkable comeback and took the final five points to down the Warriors 5-4.

Yale 17, Wayne State 10

Yale used 6-3 wins in the sabre and epee to help claim a 17-10 win over WSU. Gibczynski continued to pace the Warriors in sabre bouts with three wins against the Bulldogs.

Raffi Nersessian posted two victories in foil action, but it wasn't quite enough as Yale won 5-4.

Zingerman won all three of his epee match-ups in the epee squad's 6-3 defeat.

Wayne State 14, Stevens Tech 13

Wayne State was able to salvage the weekend with a 14-13 win over Stevens Tech to close out its participation at the NYU Invitational. While Stevens Tech claimed 5-4 wins in both the sabre and epee, WSU's foil team came through with a 6-3 effort to pull off the win.

Mulligan, Nathan Kumar and Michael Ramlow each were able to win twice to help WSU get its only win of the day. Gibczynski and Zingerman continued their stellar days, each winning three more times.
