In its final tune-up before the Midwest Fencing Conference Championships, the Wayne State men’s fencing team won all eight of its matches on Sunday at the Notre Dame Duals. The Warriors’ perfect day improved their overall record to 17-9 on the season.

Wayne State’s wins came over Illinois (19-8), Indiana (21-6), Purdue (23-4), Cleveland State (14-13), Lawrence (20-7), Wisconsin (17-10), Detroit (19-8) and Chicago (23-4).

Leading the way for WSU was junior Jakub Gibczynski (Lodz, Poland/Lodz) who was a flawless 22-0 in sabre matches. Gibczynsk now has 171 regular-season dual wins for his career. Wayne State’s sabre squad, which combined for a 63-9 record on the day, also featured junior Andrew Opalewski (Macomb, Mich./Utica Eisenhower) and freshman Demetrius Dixon (Detroit, Mich./Cesar Chavez Academy). Opalewski and Dixon went 19-3 and 16-6 respectively.

WSU’s foilists also had a strong showing as well with a 50-22 record. Sophomore Michael Ramlow (Midland, Mich./Midland) paced the foil squad with a 15-3 record. Junior Tim Mulligan (Concord, Mich./Concord (Jackson C.C.) and sophomore Raffi Nersessian (Fort Wayne, Ind./The Culver Academies) both chipped in 14 victories each for the Green and Gold.

The Epee trio of junior Robert Neda (Royal Oak, Mich./Lake Shore High School), sophomore Mariusz Debowski (Lincolnshire, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) and junior Joe Fresard (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich./Grosse Pointe North) totaled a 43-29 record with marks of 15-8, 12-11 and 13-10 along with three opponent forfeits.

Wayne State will head back to Notre Dame in three weeks (March 6-7) for the Midwest Fencing Conference Championships. Last year WSU placed third out of 20 schools in the men’s team competition.
