CANTON, Ohio - The Wayne State men's swimming and diving team moved up from fifth to third following Friday's final heats on the third day of the NCAA Championships at C.T. Branin Natatorium.
Wayne State has 250 points, giving the Warriors just a one-point cushion over fourth-place Grand Valley State (249) heading into Saturday. Drury continues to lead (401), followed by Incarnate Word (314).
Oskar Nordstrand (Stockholm, Sweden) began the evening with a fifth-place finish in the 500 freestyle (4:31.72).
In the 100 backstroke,
Nathan Hesche (Jackson, Mich.) came in seventh (49.93) followed by
Cauli Bedran (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) in eighth (50.02).
Joaquin Abascal Gallegos (Madrid, Spain) took second place in the “A” final of the 100 breaststroke (54.88) while
Matthew Laschuk (Tecumseh, Ont./Academie Ste. Cecile), who competed in three events Friday, swam the “B” final and placed 15th (57.67).
Laschuk also swam the “B” final of the 200 butterfly and came in 10th (1:51.22).
Ben Dueweke (Macomb, Mich./Dakota) finished 15th (1:52.66).
Wrapping up the third night of competition was the 800 free relay combination of Abascal Gallegos,
Justin Shields (Chesterfield, Mich./Anchor Bay), Laschuk, and Nordstrand, which tied West Chester for fourth place (6:43.89).
The fourth and final day of competition at the NCAA Championships on Saturday begins with the preliminaries at 10:30 a.m.
