Softball Defeats Dowling College 6-2

Hanes strikes out 10.

Kissimmee, Fla. -- The fourth-ranked Wayne State University softball team (15-3 overall) recorded a 6-2 triumph over Dowling College (2-3 overall) Monday afternoon in the Rebel Spring Games.

After the Golden Lions scored an unearned run in the top of the first, the Warriors tied the game in the bottom of the frame.  Alison Allen (Redford, Mich. / Farmington Hills Mercy) had a leadoff single to center and advanced to second on a passed ball.  Allen moved to third on Jaci Banton's (Richmond Hill, Ont. / Cardinal Carter) sacrifice bunt and scored on Rebecca Stanley's (Waterloo, Ont. / Waterloo C.I.) sacrifice fly.

DC went ahead 2-1 in the fifth on an RBI double by Emily Slack after a WSU error.

WSU responded with five runs on four hits in the bottom of the fifth.  Freshman Steph Foreman (Cambridge, Ont. / Preston) led off the fifth with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Lauren Histed (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Utica).  Banton's double plated Foreman, while Stanley reached on an error which allowed Banton to score.  Brittany Omelanchuk (Brooklin, Ont. / Wilson S.S.) walked and Becca Ryan (Westland, Mich. / Dearborn Divine Child) followed with a two-run double.  After a pitching change, Stephanie LeClair (Kitchener, Ont. / Forest Heights C.I.) had an RBI single scoring Ryan.

WSU pitcher Casey Hanes (Richmond, Va. / Douglas Freeman) retired the final six Dowling hitters for her 11th win of the season.  Hanes struck out 10 and walked one while allowing just two hits and two unearned runs.

DC hurlers Felicia Mendoza (1-1) and Jessie Stavola combined to strike out three and walk two.  Two Golden Lion miscues allowed five unearned runs.

Of WSU's eight hits, Histed was the only player with a multiple-hit game.
