Several members of the 2010 Wayne State University softball team were key contributors in the Midland Lady Explorers winning the Tune-Up Softball Tournament last weekend.
The
Lady Explorers went 5-0 as
Casey Hanes recorded three wins and
Sam Cain garnered the other two victories.
WSU sophomore
Lauren Histed had a two-run home run in the 3-0 championship game win over the Grosse Pointe Batbusters. Warrior freshman
Makelle Barski contributed two hits. Hanes recorded nine strikeouts in the two-hit shutout with zero walks.
In the opening game of the tournament, Cain struck out 10 and hit a two-run home run among her four RBI in an 8-0 win over the Elyria (Ohio) North Coast Spirit squad. Barski and
Dani Williams each had two hits in the victory.
Hanes earned her first win of the tournament, a 6-3 triumph over Midland's Line-Drive team, in last Saturday's (June 19) second game.
Cain and Hanes combined in a 5-1 victory over the Toledo Wizards. Cain struck out five in five innings before Hanes tossed the final two frames.
In the semifinal round, the Lady Explorers defeated the North Coast Spirit 12-1 in five innings. Hanes went the distance striking out five. Cain had two hits including a home run and three RBI, while Barski added two hits.
The 2010 Wayne State softball squad finished seventh in the nation with a 52-13 record
