Men's Tennis Signs Four Recruits

Wayne State University men's tennis head coach Bryan Morrow announced that four student-athletes have signed National Letter of Intents to join the program.

“I think all four of these players are very talented and should have the potential of having an immediate impact,” Morrow said. “These guys will make it real interesting to see who the top guys are going to be this year. More importantly, they'll add depth and youth to our team. They have a ton of upside.”

The four signees, Alec Attala (Clinton Twp., Mich.), Michael FitzGerald (Grosse Ile, Mich.), Amanvir Gill (Windsor, Ontario), and Melvin Joseph (Northville, Mich.), compliment a Warrior team that will return nine from last year's squad, which had its best win total since 2004 and best showing in the GLIAC tournament since 1992.

Alec Attala, a graduate of Chippewa Valley High School, earned four varsity letters with the Big Reds. Attala served as team captain during his senior year, posted a 26-1 record, and was selected to the Division 1 All-State team. Outside of high school, he earned five tournament wins in 2009, including the Motor City Open and the Fairlane Summer Tournament.

Michael FitzGerald, a graduate of Grosse Ile High School, recorded 78 wins during his career and is a three-time first team All-State selection. FitzGerald was a state-semifinalist at No. 1 singles in both 2008 and 2009. He was awarded the GIHS Ron Solack Scholarship. Based on academic and tennis achievement, FitzGerald was named the June 2008 USTA Tennis & Education Foundation Player Incentive Award winner.

Amanvir Gill is the younger brother of WSU women's tennis player Sharon Gill, who holds the record for most single wins in a career. Amanvir is a graduate of Assumption College High School in Windsor, Ontario where he was the only player on the team. He participated in the Canadian indoor nationals, finishing in the top 10, and finished in fourth place at the Ontario provincial championships.

Melvin Joseph, a graduate of Northville High School, earned three varsity letters and three state final appearances for the Mustangs. Joseph was selected to the Division 1 All-State squad and voted to the Kensington Lakes Athletic Association All-Conference team.
