Paul Winters has announced the 2010 team captains -- seniors
Daunte Akra,
Marc Cuddeback and
Stan Thornton, along with juniors
Joe Long and
Nick Thomas.
Akra, a 2005 graduate of Detroit Kettering High School, redshirted in 2009 after playing in six games in 2008. The criminal justice major is slated to be a key member of the WSU defensive line in 2010.
Cuddeback, a 2006 graduate of De La Salle Collegiate High School, has started 25 games on the offensive line (22 at center, 2 at right guard, 1 at left guard) including the last 22 contests at center. He was a Second Team All-GLIAC selection a year ago. Cuddeback is majoring in criminal justice and has been named to the Coach's Honor Roll (term gpa 3.0-3.49) three times.
Thornton, a 2006 graduate of Cincinnati (Ohio) Withrow International HS, has started 24 games at cornerback for the Green and Gold. He ranks second in school history with 252 interception return yards and third in passes defended with 32 (12 interceptions plus 20 pass break-ups). He is seventh in kickoff returns (41) and fourth in kickoff return yards (1122). Thornton is a kinesiology major, who has been named to the Coach's Honor Roll (term gpa 3.0-3.49) twice.
Long, a 2007 graduate of Lapeer East High School, has started all 22 career games at left tackle. He has been a two-time Honorable Mention All-GLIAC selection. Long is a a secondary education major, who has been named to either the Athletic Director's Honor Roll (term gpa 3.5+) or the Coach's Honor Roll (term gpa 3.0-3.49) a total of three times.
Thomas, a 2008 graduate of Akron (Ohio) St. Vincent-St. Mary High School, has played in all 22 games since arriving in Motown. He is a pre-season All-America candidate by both Consensus Draft Services and D2Football.com. Thomas was voted WSU's 2009 Defensive Most Valuable Player after recording a team-high 130 tackles including 60 solo. A finance major, he has been named to the Athletic Director's Honor Roll (term gpa 3.5+) all four semesters.
