The following feature on the quarterbacks is the final installment of position by position on the Wayne State football program.
Three returning quarterbacks and two true freshmen make up the quarterback quintet.
Mickey Mohner returns after playing in 10 games, starting the final seven contests a year ago, and Nick Moeller is slated to be his back up.
Mohner threw for 1,123 yards on 73-of-138 passing and nine touchdowns in 2009. He compiled a 4-4 record after earning the win in relief against Findlay. His best performance came in the finale at Grand Valley State University where he threw for 382 yards on 24-of-40 passing and four touchdowns.
“He was awesome this spring,” head coach Paul Winters said of Mohner. “He completed 70 percent of his passes in every scrimmage, which is the kind of productivity we've been looking for since day one and we are finally starting to get it. He's been a leader and we're really excited about him.”
“Nick Moeller also had a good spring. He's athletic and provides us with a little bit more of a running threat. He's a good football player. Zack George is going to be our punter and obviously give us a veteran presence as a back-up. We really like Sean Guinane. He has a tremendous future. The quarterback position is as good as I could hope it to be. It really is going to be an outstanding battle; just watching these guys compete everyday in practice will be fun.”
This is quite possibly the most talented group of quarterbacks we have had in a long time at Wayne State," commented quarterbacks coach Logan Hughes. "We have size, we have speed and we have great arm strength. Mickey is entering the season as our starter, but Nick and Zack will battle to get in the lineup as well."
Quarterbacks coach Logan Hughes thoughts on each player:
Mickey Mohner (6-2, 221, r-So., 1L) -- "Mickey is a very talented young man who can make all the throws at the quarterback position. He has good feet in the pocket and great vision down field. He stepped in last year and started the final seven games, and we look for him to have a huge year for us."
Nick Moeller (6-2, 208, r-Fr.) -- "Nick's best asset is his ability to move around in the pocket and make things happen with his feet. He has continued to improve his arm strength and his ability to read defenses. Nick has a bright future at Wayne State."
Zack George (6-1, 215, r-Sr., 2L) -- "Zack is our most experienced quarterback who we can put in the game at any time and not miss a beat. He has continued to work with the younger quarterbacks to help them learn the offense. Zack is the ultimate teammate and champion."
Sean Guinane (6-4, 234, Fr.) -- "Sean is a big quarterback with a great arm and quick feet. He is a hard-working young man with maximum potential. His knowledge of the game has helped him adjust to our offense on the fly, and he will put pressure on the other quarterbacks for playing time."
Doug Griffin (6-1, 207, Fr.) -- "Doug has the best feet of the five quarterbacks. He is very fast and he makes things happen with his feet. He is adjusting to a new style of offense, but with his athletic ability, we know he will be able to make the transition without any problems."
