Post-Game Interview with Jim Fetter

DETROIT -
The Wayne State University women's hockey team (8-13-0) snapped its six-game losing streak with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over 10th-ranked Quinnipiac University (15-8-1) on Friday night at the City Sports Center.

Clinging to a 2-0 lead late in the third, the Bobcats scored an extra-attacker goal with 1:19 remaining in regulation, but subsequent scoring chances were stymied by the Warriors, who defeated a ranked opponent for the first time in over two years.

After a scoreless first period, Micheline Frappier (Val Caron, Ont./Sudbury Lady Wolves) snapped the tie with her fourth goal of the season at 4:48 of the second. Near the end of a lengthy power play, Julie Ingratta (Markham, Ont./North American Hockey Academy) fired the puck in from the left wing, and a battle for the rebound culminated with Frappier knocking it past Victoria Vigilanti to put the Warriors ahead. Adrianna Pfeffer (Farmington Hills, Mich./Belle Tire) earned her first of two assists on the play.

Midway through the third, Jill Szandzik (Warren, Mich./Little Caesars) scored her second of the year, crashing the net on a pass from the corner by Veronique Laramee-Paquette (Mont-Tremblant, Que./Les Cheminots).

Regan Boulton cut the Bobcats' deficit in half when her blast from inside the blue line sailed in through heavy traffic in front of Delayne Brian (Winnipeg, Man./Notre Dame Hounds). With Vigilanti still on the bench in the waning seconds, Quinnipiac could not find the equalizer.

Brian and Vigilanti finished with 28 and 19 saves, respectively. The Warriors also held QU to 0-for-4 on power plays, and have killed 21 straight penalties over the last six games.

Wayne State and Quinnipiac will finish the weekend series tomorrow at 2:00 p.m.

NOTES
Wayne State was winless its last 18 contests against ranked opponents … the most recent victory was Nov. 15, 2008, on the back end of a sweep over No. 10 Northeastern … Frappier has four points in the last five games.
