DETROIT -
The Wayne State University women's hockey team (8-14-0) split its weekend series with 10th-ranked Quinnipiac University (16-8-1) following Saturday afternoon's 3-0 setback at the City Sports Center.

Kate Wheeler scored twice for the Bobcats, and Victoria Vigilanti made 20 saves for her seventh shutout of the season.

Despite the loss, Delayne Brian (Winnipeg, Man./Notre Dame Hounds) finished with 31 saves, her 16th performance with 30-plus saves this season. She has 700 saves, the second-highest single-season total in program history.

Brian, who came into the weekend fifth on the single-season saves list, passed Valery Turcotte (2007-08) and Anna VanderMarliere (2002-03) last night, and with her first nine saves Saturday eclipsed Turcotte's 2006-07 total of 677.

Less than 24 hours after WSU snapped an 18-game winless streak against ranked opponents with a 2-1 victory, the Bobcats handed the Warriors their fifth shutout loss of the year and out-shot the Warriors, 34-20.

A costly turnover in the WSU defensive zone led to Wheeler's first goal 2:44 into the contest. She later scored on a wrist shot from the left wing on a power-play at 13:39 of the second period, snapping WSU's streak of 23 straight killed penalties.

Just 17 seconds later, Amanda Colin popped in a rebound off a shot from Kelly Babstock to make it a 3-0 game.

Wayne State had the edge in shots on goal in the third period, 11-8, but could not put anything past Vigilanti, who improved to 15-8-1 on the year.

Wayne State will wrap up its six-game homestand next weekend, Jan. 28-29, against Syracuse. Friday is Doc Andrews Alumni Night, a special event to raise funds for the Doc Andrews Scholarship Endowment.

NOTES
WSU is 11-3-1 all-time against Quinnipiac … VanderMarliere holds the school single-season saves record of 935, set in 2000-01 … the Warriors are 0-11-0 when their opponents score first.
