Frappier scores for WSU late in third period

DETROIT - The Wayne State University women's hockey team (8-15-1, 1-8-1 CHA) lost a 3-1 decision to Syracuse University (11-13-4, 5-4-1 CHA) on Saturday afternoon at the City Sports Center.

Down 2-0 with less than four minutes remaining in regulation, Micheline Frappier (Van Caron, Ont./Sudbury Lady Wolves) scored a power-play goal cut WSU's deficit in half. Delayne Brian (Winnipeg, Man./Notre Dame Hounds) was pulled with 1:18 to go, but a short-handed empty-netter by Isabel Menard sealed the Warriors' fate.

Brian and Jenesica Drinkwater totaled 26 and 25 saves, respectively, in a penalty-laden contest, as the Warriors and Orange combined for 20 minor penalties.

Following the second scoreless first period of the weekend, Ashley Cockell scored a power-play goal with a slap shot from the point off a rebound at 7:32. Just 39 seconds later, Stefanie Marty took a long pass from Caitlin Roach and beat Brian with a wrister from the right wing at 8:11.

Frappier's goal, her fourth of the season, came when she knocked in a rebound off a shot from Julie Ingratta (Markham, Ont./North American Hockey Academy). Adrianna Pfeffer (Farmington Hills, Mich./Belle Tire) also assisted on the play at 16:11.

Wayne State will travel to Erie, Pa., next weekend to take on fourth-ranked Mercyhurst in a two-game series.

NOTES
WSU is 3-5-1 in games scoreless after the first period … Pfeffer has five assists and seven points this season, both career-highs … Ingratta leads the team with 18 points … the Warriors are 0-12-0 when their opponent scores first.
