Three Football Warriors Earn Daktronics All-America Accolades

Long voted to First Team, while Jones and Burrell earn Second Team honors.

Three members of the 2011 Wayne State University football team were voted to the Daktronics, Inc. All-America squad late last week.

Daktronics Release.

Senior left tackle Joe Long (Lapeer, Mich./East), who is one of eight finalists nationally for the Upshaw Award, was named to the First Team after being recognized with Super Region #3 Second Team honors a year ago.  Long, along with the rest of the offensive line helped the Warriors rush for over 200 yards per game during its 16-game campaign, including 211 yards in Saturday's national championship game vs. Pittsburg State.  Long set the Wayne State record for consecutive and career starts (49).  A four-time All-GLIAC performer, Long blocked for a 1,000-yard rusher all four seasons including two this past year alone.

Senior wide receiver Troy Burrell (Port Huron, Mich.) was selected to the Daktronics All-America Second Team.  He led WSU with 87 receptions for 1,633 yards (both school single-season records) and 15 touchdowns and finished his career with a 38-game reception streak.  Burrell concluded his collegiate career second in WSU history with 3,132 receiving yards while ranking first in career receptions (187) and second in TD catches (27). His 16.75 yards per catch ranks in the top 10 all-time at the school.

Senior safety Jeremy Jones (Rockford, Mich.) did a lot of everything on defense for the Warriors in 2011 to earn Second Team All-America recognition from Daktronics.  He led the team in both solo tackles (73) and total tackles (106), interceptions (9), interception return yards (196) and quarterback hurries (4), while ranking second in tackles for loss (12.5) and third in both sacks (6.5) and pass break-ups (5).

Despite playing 10 of the 16 games on the road in 2011, the Warrior defense limited opponents to an average of 24 pointer per game and only three times did WSU allow more than 28 points in a contest.
