NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. - Wayne State and Niagara battled to a scoreless tie through 60 minutes Friday night, but Kathleen Bortuzzo's game-winner 1:34 into overtime gave the Purple Eagles (10-14-5, 7-4-2 CHA) a
1-0 win over the Warriors (8-19-2, 1-12-2 CHA) at Dwyer Arena.
Delayne Brian (Winnipeg, Man./Notre Dame Hounds) and Jenni Bauer made 31 and 18 saves, respectively, as WSU's winless streak reached eight games.
Bortuzzo's goal came during a Niagara power-play, as she popped in a shot off Brian's pads from the far post. Leah Whittaker, who made the pass from the right point, and Jacqueline Spring assisted on the play as NU improved to 2-1-5 in overtime games this year.
Brian moved closer to the WSU single-season saves record Friday, as her 31 stops brought her total to 920. She needs 16 saves to surpass Anna VanderMarliere (935; 2000-01) and establish a new program mark.
The Warriors went 0-for-4 on power-plays, as they were held at bay by a Purple Eagle unit which came in ranked 13th nationally in penalty killing.
Wayne State will close out its 2010-11 regular-season schedule with a rematch against Niagara on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
