ERIE, Pa. - The Wayne State University women's hockey team (8-17-1, 1-10-1 CHA) saw its winless streak reach five games following Saturday afternoon's
3-1 setback at fourth-ranked Mercyhurst College (24-5-0, 13-0-0 CHA).
Jesse Scanzano finished with a hat trick for the Lakers, who defeated the Warriors for the 14th straight time.
Alyssa Baldin (Mississauga, Ont./Mississauga Jr. Chiefs) spoiled Hillary Pattenden's shutout bid with a power-play goal at 14:11 of the third period. Pattenden and
Delayne Brian (Winnipeg, Man./Notre Dame Hounds) totaled 19 and 34 saves, respectively.
After a scoreless first period, the Lakers nearly took the lead just 30 seconds into the second as Meghan Agosta's hit the post off a breakaway following a turnover in the neutral zone. Agosta, the nation's leading scorer, did not have a goal in the game but assisted on all three of Scanzano's tallies.
With less than 40 seconds until the second intermission, Agosta won a draw to the right of Brian and pulled it back to Scanzano, who fired one in off Brian's pads at the 19:24 mark.
Penalties were troublesome for the Warriors early in the third period, as Mercyhurst added a pair of 5-on-3 power-play goals to take a 3-0 lead. Scanzano popped in a rebound to the left of Brian at 1:31, and just 46 seconds later scored from up against the post to Brian's right side off a pass across the slot from Agosta.
Baldin's goal, her team-leading 11th of the season, came off an off-balance shot from the slot after her initial attempt was blocked by a defenseman.
Wayne State returns to Detroit next weekend for its final home series of the year against Robert Morris at the City Sports Center.

Brian finished with a career-high 85 saves in the series … Saturday was the 10th time this season WSU and its opponent have been scoreless through the first 20 minutes (Warriors are 3-6-1 in those games) … Baldin has 18 points on the season, matching her freshman year total and two shy of her career-best from last season.
