Women's Fencing Earns Five Medals at Danosi Open

Olivia Dobbs wins foil for third straight year, Kaja Klodawska earns women's sabre victory


DETROIT -- The Wayne State women's fencing team collected two victories and five medalists overall Sunday at the Istvan Danosi/Michigan Open, held at the Matthaei.

Wayne State senior Olivia Dobbs (Detroit Mich./Farmington) earned her fourth straight Danosi Open title in the women's foil, winning in the gold medal match over the University of Michigan's Carolyn Grant. WSU senior Tiaja Sabrie (Midland, Mich./Dow) earned a bronze medal after falling in the semifinals to Grant, 11-10.

Junior Kaja Klodawska (Lodz, Poland) won the women's sabre for the second straight year, earning another gold medal for the Warriors. Sophomore Andrea Ozanich (Berkley, Mich./Berkley) earned a seventh-place finish in the event.

Junior Brianne Hefner (Rochester, Mich./Stoney Creek) and sophomore Rachel Davis (Oak Park, Mich./Berkley) tied for third in the women's epee, as each reached semifinal bouts before being defeated. Sophomore Cydney McChesney (Berkley, Mich./Bishop Foley) also finished in the top 10 in the epee, finishing in ninth place.

Also for WSU, freshman Meghan Flynn collected a 13th-place finish in the foil out of 19 total competitors.
