Women's Tennis Inks Three Recruits


DETROIT -- Wayne State University women's tennis coach Sheila Snyder has announced the addition of three recruits who will join her program this fall.  Rebeca Aguirre (Puerto Vallarta, Mexico / Bachillerato Virtual Universidad de Guadalajara), Julia Kamenko (Thornhill, Ont. / Vaughan S.S.), and Alexandra Poissant (Laval, Que. / Georges Vanier S.S.), signed National Letters of Intent earlier this month.

Aguirre is 5' 10" and is from Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. She is the daughter of Noberto Aguirre and Rebeca Soto. Born June 10, 1993, she will soon graduate from Bachillerato Virtual Universidad de Guadalajara. She has won both the Jalisco State and Mexican National Championships and was a doubles finalist with the ITF. She intends to study media arts.

Kamenko, also 5' 10", was born February 11, 1993, in Russia, but currently resides in Thornhill, Ontario. She is the daughter of Alex and Margaret Kamenko. She will graduate from Vaughan Secondary School where she won the 2008 Ontario Federaton of School Athletic Associations Regional Championship. Kamenko finished 2011 ranked in the top seven in Ontario and top 13 in the under-18 age group for all of Canada. She reached the quarterfinals at the Ontario Outdoor Junior Provincial Championships and made it to the second round of the main draw in the Ontario Junior Nationals U18 Championship. Kamenko plans to study pre-medicine.

Poissant is 5' 7" and hails from Laval, Quebec. Born November 13, 1994, she is the daughter of Matin Poissant and Chantal Sirard and has a younger sister. She will soon graduate from Georges Vanier Secondary School and has won 13 tournaments in Quebec. Poissant has also won six tournaments in France and has played in the Canadian National Championship.

The three new NLI signees join Manu Materak, who enrolled in January and will be eligible to compete in the Fall of 2012.

WSU had just one senior (Kristina Goranskaya) on the six-player 2011-12 squad which won a school record 22 matches, including a 10-1 mark in league play.
