43 WSU Spring Student-Athletes Earn GLIAC All-Academic Recognition


The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has released its spring sports All-Academic Excellence (cumulative gpa 3.5+) and All-Academic (cum. gpa 3.0-3.49) teams for the 2012 season.  Wayne State had a total of 43 student-athletes recognized by the league office for their academic accomplishments including 20 from baseball (7-Excellence + 13 All-Academic), 10 from softball (7-Excellence +3 All-Academic), seven from men's tennis, and six from golf.

Representing baseball on the All-Academic Excellence team were seven seniors in Ryan Buter (North Muskegon, Mich.), Andrew Ciennik (Waterford, Mich./Mott), J.J. Ciennik (Waterford, Mich./Mott), Billy Hurley (Mississauga, Ont./St. Aloysius Gonzaga), Corey Post (Coldwater, Mich.), Josh Schafer (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.), and Phil Swanson (Rochester Hills, Mich./Stoney Creek).

Another 13 baseball student-athletes received GLIAC All-Academic honors.  They were seniors Justin DeFrancis (Rochester, Mich./Stoney Creek), Matt Mahalak (Wyandotte, Mich./Our Lady of Mt. Carmel), Eric Ramaekers (Lake Orion, Mich.), Justin Sylvester (Macomb, Mich./Dakota), Kyle Vesey (Brighton, Mich.) and Josh Wedesky (Fowlerville, Mich.), juniors Kasey Koster (Portage, Mich./Central) and Alex Pierse (Clinton Twp., Mich./De La Salle), along with sophomores Chris Gebara (Troy, Mich.), Jeff Sorenson (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson), and Kirk Stambaugh (Sylvania, Ohio/Southview), and redshirt freshmen Christian Bilkovic (West Bloomfield, Mich.) and Mark Lepri (Shelby Twp., Mich./Utica Eisenhower).

Junior golfer Tyler Haksluoto (St. Clair Shores, Mich./South Lake) earned a spot on the GLIAC All-Academic Excellence team, while five other golfers received All-Academic accolades.  They were senior Jafar Dada (Lapeer, Mich./Lapeer East), juniors Brad Griffith (Webberville, Mich./Fowlerville) and Alex LaSerra (Jackson, Mich./Napoleon), and sophomores Reid Dean (Fowlerville, Mich.) and Rob Favaro (LaSalle, Ont./St. Thomas of Villanova).

Three CoSIDA Academic All-Americans are part of the seven softball student-athletes to be named to the GLIAC All-Academic Excellence squad.  They are seniors Alison Allen (Redford, Mich./Farmington Hills Mercy) and Rebecca Stanley (Waterloo, Ont./Waterloo C.I.), juniors Makelle Barski (Trenton, Mich.), and Stephanie Foreman (Cambridge, Ont./Preston), and sophomores Amanda Burnard (Canton, Mich./Plymouth), Nikki Fulton (Stratford, Ont./St. Michael Catholic S.S.) and Logan White (Brantford, Ont./Johnson C.V.I.).  The three softball student-athletes earning All-Academic team honors all were seniors in Sam Cain (Taylor, Mich./Kennedy), Lauren Histed (Shelby Twp., Mich./Utica), and Rebecca Ryan (Westland, Mich./Dearborn Divine Child).

The WSU men's tennis team led all GLIAC netter squads with six All-Academic Excellence selections in senior Will Nolan (Troy, Mich.), juniors Thomas Ducret (Paris, France), Oscar Gamarra (Guayaquil, Ecuador), and Jon Groszek (Dearborn Hts., Mich./Divine Child), along with sophomores Michael FitzGerald (Grosse Ile, Mich.) and Melvin Joseph (Northville, Mich.).  Matt Fisher earned a spot on the GLIAC All-Academic team.
