Men's Tennis Preparing For Fall Tournaments

The men's tennis team at Wayne State University does not begin its regular season until the beginning of February with a short bus ride to the University of Detroit Mercy. This fall, however, the Warriors will be preparing and participating in three tournaments, which will set the stage for the team's regular season.

Singles players and doubles teams from the squad will be competing in the ITA Regional tournament, Sept. 28 through Sept. 30. This Indianapolis-based tournament has an objective of allowing WSU players to shine while also represent their school. According to head men's tennis coach Bryan Morrow, the ITA Tournament also helps to get a feel for what his lineup will look like come February.

"This tournament gives you a chance to see how you rank up against the other teams, and it gives you a chance to see what the other teams have brought in for the fall," Morrow said. "It definitely gives you a chance to see what your new players are doing, and it helps your players improve whatever rankings they may have."

The Warriors will also play in tournaments hosted by the University of Toledo and University of Detroit Mercy in early October. This will mark the first time that the Warriors have participated at UT's tournament. Last year the team competed in a different tournament hosted by Michigan State. This tournament will take place on Oct. 5 and 6.

"For the fall on the men's side of it, you try to get your guys as many matches as you can," Morrow said. "It will be a tournament with other D I schools, and probably some D II schools."

The tournament at Detroit Mercy will be a smaller tournament according to Morrow and will only be a one-day event. This tournament will be held on Oct. 13.

"The U of D tournament will be the same; they will have around four teams there," Morrow said. "Everybody gets two or three matches; two singles matches and two doubles matches, so a pretty full day of tennis."

Aman Gill Update

Last year's number one singles player, before sustaining a season-ending injury,  Aman Gill, is said to be 100 percent and ready to return to form for the Warriors come fall.

"If he comes back to form this fall, it should put us in an interesting spot because we are going to be deeper than we've ever been since I have been coaching," Morrow said. "He's 100 percent I'm told: he's hitting, he's playing well and he's ready for this fall tournament. He's a player who prior to his injury was playing great tennis and once he hurt himself he could never turn on a ball like he did before, so knowing what kind of competitor he is, he's going to come back hungry."
