Warriors strong at ITA Regionals

Doubles team falls in finals

Jenison, MI -- With weather making its mark on the ITA women's tennis regional much of the action was moved, delayed or even canceled entirely. The women of Wayne State (3-1, 3-1 GLIAC) however showed their resiliency with varying levels of success as they accounted for 13 victories on the weekend. The greatest success story of the weekend was the run made by the doubles team of Yahsha Moore (West Bloomfield, Mich. / West Bloomfield) and Anne Li Briand (Repentigny, Que. / École Secondaire Félix-Leclerc).

The top doubles team for the Warriors advanced all the way to the A flight finals after taking down four pairs of opponents along the way. The top seeded Lewis University team of Zsofia Kranczicki and Zsofia Lanstiak were just too much in the end as they grabbed an 8-5 victory in the final.  Moore and Li Briand played great all weekend and solidified themselves as a top doubles team in the region.

Julia Kamenko (Thornhill, Ont. / Vaughan S.S.) and Alex Poissant (Laval, Que. / Vanier Prep) picked up the other A flight doubles victory before they also dropped a match to the team of Kranczicki and Lanstiak. Over in B flight doubles Tanya Joseph (Northville, Mich. / Northville) and Jessica Kruczek (Detroit, Mich. / Lakeview) won a pair of matches to advance to the semifinal round before falling 8-9 (9) to Janie Sell and Sydnie Sine of Ferris State.

Li Briand and Kamenko picked up singles victories as well with Yahsha Moore scooping up two singles wins before falling in the round of 16.

Much of the consolation matches were canceled due to rain with some B flight action needing to be rescheduled. The Warrior ladies now turn their focus to Grand Valley as the Lakers will travel to Detroit on Tuesday at 1:00 PM.
