WDET's Craig Fahle interview with Anthony Bass
Detroit - On Saturday, January 26 the Wayne State University baseball program partnered with former Warrior and current San Diego Padres Pitcher Anthony Bass to host an inaugural pitching camp for participants ranging from grades 3-12. Approximately 70 participants from Michigan, Ohio, and Ontario attended the camp at the WSU Athletics Multi-Purpose Facility. Bass hosted several pitching specific camp stations that delivered both physical and mental concepts involved with achieving success on the mound.
“This was a very successful event and we were excited to reunite with the former WSU letterwinner Anthony Bass. The stations and drills were very educational and we believe every participant left camp with a great game plan to become successful on the mound in 2013. Beyond the pitching specific details, I believe Anthony created a tremendous amount of motivation for participants to continue pushing for their baseball goals on and off the field. Bass proved to be a great example; especially considering he is a local product who has advanced to the Major League level.” noted WSU Head Baseball Coach
Ryan Kelley.
Joining the camp staff included former WSU Baseball Pitchers: Dan Barnes (2004-2007), Dane Little (2006-2009), Ryan Mosher (2005-2010),
Josh Wedesky (2009-2012), Brett Shankin (2008-2011), and Tyler Loehr (2008-2011). Including Bass, these former Warriors amassed 112 victories for WSU thru their collegiate student-athlete careers.
Former Wayne State University right-handed hurler Anthony Bass (Trenton, Mich.) returned to campus and teamed up with the Warriors to host an extensive pitching specific camp. A 2008 fifth-round draft pick of the Padres, Bass has pitched with San Diego across the previous two Major League Baseball seasons. He has appeared in 51 games including 18 starts on the mound. Bass has amassed a career 3.72 ERA with 104 strike outs thru 145.1 innings pitched at the big league level. Thru his entire professional career Bass has comprised an overall 33-25 record thru 149 appearances with a 3.3 ERA and 420 strikeouts.
While at Wayne State University, Bass was the highest MLB draft pick in program history. A Rawlings/ABCA All-America First Team and NCBWA All-America Third Team selection in 2008, Bass was also selected to the Daktronics, Inc. and Rawlings/ABCA All-Region First Teams, earned Pitcher of the Year honors from the latter organization as well as a Gold Glove for outstanding defense. He was also named the GLIAC Conference Pitcher of the Year and First Team All-GLIAC. In his three year career, Bass ranks in the top 10 all-time at Wayne State in several categories, including: second in strikeout/walk ratio (3.38), third in victories (21), tied for third in winning percentage (.700), fourth in strikeouts (206), seventh in starts (33), eighth in innings pitched (213.0), and tied for 10th in complete games (14).
