DETROIT -- The Wayne State Volleyball team (8-9, 5-4) dropped its second match of the weekend on Saturday afternoon against Northwood (11-6, 6-3) inside the Matthaei Center. The Timberwolves took set one 25-22 and set two 28-26 before the Warriors responded with a 25-23 set-three victory. Northwood sealed the win with a 26-24 victory in the fourth set.
Kristen Bulkiewicz (LaSalle, Ont. / Sandwich) led the Warriors with 17 kills and now has 1,148 kills in her career, which ranks ninth all-time in program history. Bulkiewicz passed Missy Odell (1987-90) on Saturday. Three Timberwolves finished with double-digit kills led by an impressive 22 on a .308 hitting percentage from Julia Pakhomenko.
Wayne State took a 9-8 lead after a block from
Essence Jackson-Jones (Muskegon, Mich.) and
Madison Reeves (Indianapolis, Ind. / Avon). Northwood collected the momentum and led 16-13 after a WSU attack error. The visitors would not relinquish the lead and would win set one, 25-22.
Northwood led 4-1 to begin set two and stretched its lead to 7-2 before Coach Phil Nickel was forced to take a timeout. The Warriors would come back tie the set at 10-10 and eventually would take a 15-13 lead following a 4-0 WSU run. The two teams traded points and were tied 20-20. Northwood gained control of the set at 23-20 but the Warriors would not go away and tied the set at 23-23. WSU led 26-25 but NU rallied to take the next three points and win the set 28-26.
Northwood continued its strong play and led 11-5 to begin the third set and led 13-8 following a kill from Krysta Kramer. However, the Warriors would respond with an 8-1 run to take a 16-14 lead. Northwood tied the set at 18-18 on a kill from Pakhomenko. The Warriors would close the set out with a NU attack error to win, 25-23, and avoid the sweep.
Set four was tied at 10-10 after a kill from
Mikayla Shell (Croswell, Mich. / Croswell-Lexington). The rest of the set was very tightly contested and the two teams were tied at 16-16. The Green & Gold took an 18-16 lead on a service ace from
Ellen Oppenheim (St. Joseph, Mich.). The Timberwolves answered with a 5-1 run to take 21-20 lead. A
Heather Weiss (Fort Gratiot, Mich. / Port Huron) kill gave the Warriors a 23-22 lead but NU would take four of the next five points to win the set 26-24 and the match 3-1.
Joining Bulkiewicz with double-digit kills was Weiss with 10. Reeves handed out 37 assists and collected 10 digs.
Macy Steenhuysen (Grand Rapids, Mich. / East Kentwood) led the defense with 19 digs. The Warriors finished with 11 total team blocks and hit .203 compared to NU's .221.
Wayne State will travel to Grand Valley on Friday for 7 PM contest.
