Box Score

AURORA, Ill. -- The Wayne State University volleyball team (8-12) took a break from its GLIAC schedule to begin play in the Sixth Annual GLIAC/GLVC Crossover. The Warriors were swept by Indianapolis (13-8) to begin the tournament. The Greyhounds took set one 25-17, set two 25-21 and set three 25-13.

After day one the GLVC leads the way with a 13-11 record against its GLIAC opponents. WSU is now 9-8 all-time in the event. The Crossover is the largest collegiate volleyball tournament in the nation, totalling 32 teams and 48 matches in two days.

Indy started fast and led 4-1 to open the first set. Heather Weiss (Fort Gratiot, Mich. / Port Huron) and Emily Norscia (Livonia, Mich. / Livonia Churchill) teamed up for back-to-back kills to tie the set at 4-4. Norscia returned from injury to see her first action of the season. However, Indy would collect the next point to break the tie and not look back, winning the set 25-17.

The Warriors were unable to get into a rhythm in the second set and were never able to grab the lead. Indy posted a wire-to-wire victory, 25-21. A late kill from Jessica DeLeeuw cut the deficit to 22-19 but that would be as close the Green & Gold would come.

The Greyhounds kept the pressure on in the third set, racing out to a 6-0 lead and eventually led 11-2. Indy would control the remainder of the set and win easily 25-13.

Kristen Bulkiewicz (LaSalle, Ont. / Sandwich) tied for the most kills for either team during the match with 11 while DeLeeuw collected a career-high 21 assists. Bulkiewicz is 17 kills shy of tying Megan Smolen (2002-05) for seventh all-time in program history with 1,200 kills. Hannah Williams (Plainwell, Mich. / Delton Kellogg (Kalamazoo Valley CC)) paced the defense with 15 digs.

WSU will conclude the Crossover with two matches on Saturday. First against Rockhurst at 10 AM and Bellarmine at 4 PM.
