DETROIT -- The Wayne State volleyball team (8-15, 5-7 GLIAC) dropped a five-setter to Ohio Dominican (10-14, 4-8) on Friday night inside the Matthaei Center. The Panthers took set one 25-22, set three 26-11 and the deciding fifth set 15-11. Wayne State won set two 25-21 and forced a tiebreaker with a 25-11 rout in set number four.
ODU led 5-2 to begin the first set. The Warriors came back to take a 7-6 lead on a service ace from
Kristen Bulkiewicz (LaSalle, Ont. / Sandwich). ODU took a 9-7 lead before WSU went on an 8-0 run to lead 15-8. The visiting Panthers would rally and cut the deficit to 17-14 after a 5-0 run. WSU would get to 20 first on a
Mikayla Shell (
Mikayla Shell) kill to give the Warriors a 20-18 advantage. Bulkiewicz followed with a kill of her own before ODU would finish the set on a 7-1 run to win 25-22.
The second set was tied at 5-5 after a WSU service error. The Green & Gold would extend the lead to 13-7 after a kill from
Kelsey Bonewits (Griffith, Ind.) and an ODU attack error. Momentum stayed with the home bench and WSU led 18-12. ODU would stage a comeback but the Warriors were able to close out the set with a 25-21 win on a kill from
Emily Norscia (Livonia, Mich. / Livonia Churchill).
WSU opened the third set on a 5-0 run but ODU would respond with a 6-0 run later in the set to take a 10-7 lead. WSU would have another answer and led 15-12 after an ODU attack error to cap a 5-0 Warrior run. The Warriors would again reach 20 first after a Bonewits kill but the Panthers would go on a 10-3 run to end the set and win 26-24.
It was all Green & Gold in the fourth set. The Warriors opened the set fast and led 13-2 after a combo-block from Shell and Bulkiewicz. WSU extended lead to 19-4 before ODU would slow the rally. The Warriors ended the set on a 3-0 run and a kill from
Carlee Hunt (Waterford, Mich. / Walled Lake Northern) to give WSU a 25-11 win and force a fifth-set tiebreaker.
The Warriors led 5-2 to begin the fifth set but ODU would answer and lead 6-5 on a poor set from
Madison Reeves (Indianapolis, Ind. / Avon). WSU led 8-7 and 9-8 but the momentum shifted to the visitors as the Panthers would take six of the last eight points to win 15-11 and take the match 3-2.
Bulkiewicz posted her 32nd career double-double with 18 kills and 12 digs. For her career, Bulkiewicz has 1,228 kills, which now puts her in fifth place in program history. On Friday night she passed Rachel Rogers (1986-89) and Sandi Lane (2002-05). Next on the list is Jenny Logue (1994-97) with 1,242.
Heather Weiss (Fort Gratiot, Mich. / Port Huron) tallied 14 kills while Bonewits contributed 10. Reeves dished out 41 assists and a career-high 17 digs while Hunt collected a career-high 22 digs. The Warriors finished with 11 total team blocks and outhit ODU .175 to .103.
WSU will stay in Midtown for a 2 PM contest against Tiffin on Saturday afternoon.
