DETROIT -- Wayne State University will host the Second Annual Anthony Bass Pitching Camp on Saturday, January 25, 2014 inside the Multipurpose Indoor Facility.

Benefits of the camp will include specific station and drill work with a fundamental emphasis involving several aspects associated with the pitching position. Significance will be placed on pitching development, mechanics, and concepts involved for success on the mound.

Former Wayne State University right-handed hurler Anthony Bass (Trenton, Mich.) will return to campus and team up with the Warriors to host an extensive pitching specific camp. A 2008 fifth-round draft pick of the Padres, Bass has pitched with San Diego across the previous two Major League Baseball seasons. Bass was traded to the Houston Astros on Dec. 11.

Bass has a career 4.08 ERA over 187.1 innings pitched in 75 games played. He has made 18 starts with one complete game and 135 strikeouts. Last season he began and finished the season with the Padres.

"I'm really looking forward to the second annual pitching camp," stated Bass. "We had an excellent turnout last January and I am looking forward to seeing new and familiar faces this year."

While at Wayne State University, Bass was the highest MLB draft pick in program history. A Rawlings/ABCA All-America First Team and NCBWA All-America Third Team selection in 2008, Bass was also selected to the Daktronics, Inc. and Rawlings/ABCA All-Region First Teams, earned Pitcher of the Year honors from the latter organization as well as a Gold Glove for outstanding defense. He was also named the GLIAC Conference Pitcher of the Year and First Team All-GLIAC. In his three year career, Bass ranks in the top 10 all-time at Wayne State in several categories, including: second in strikeout/walk ratio (3.38), third in victories (21), tied for third in winning percentage (.700), fourth in strikeouts (206), seventh in starts (33), eighth in innings pitched (213.0), and tied for 10th in complete games (14).

"Anthony was a tremendous student-athlete at Wayne State University," said head coach Ryan Kelley. "Through his collegiate tenure he was consistent leader within our team's community outreach and volunteer efforts. It has been amazing witnessing him carry the same giving back passion to the Major League level. Beyond his significant pitching attributes camp participants will learn several lessons at this camp that will help them transcend both on the mound and off the field."

The camp is open to aspiring pitchers from grades 3-12 and costs $65 per person.  Registration can be completed online, in person or by mail.  In addition to the camp curriculum an autograph session will be held for all camp participants.

Wayne State baseball will also host a "Bowling For Baseball" fundraiser on Jan. 25, featuring Anthony Bass. The event is set to take place from 3-6 p.m. at Garden Bowl in Detroit. Among the games at the fundraiser are a head-to-head roll-off with Bass and a 50/50 raffle. Ticket prices range from $12-41 with the deadline being Jan. 22. Lane sponsorship is also available for $20.
