Warrior Tennis Falls at U of D

Detroit - The Wayne State University women's tennis team (16-3, 13-1 GLIAC) got back on the court Friday after an impressive fall season. The Warriors stumbled out of the gate against the Titans of Detroit, losing 5-2 at the Franklin Athletic Club.

The Titans rolled through doubles play giving themselves a quick one-point lead. WSU coach Sheila Snyder ran a new doubles team onto the courts that we didnt see in the fall as Manu Materak (Amberg, Germany / Erasmus-Gymnasium) teamed with Jessica Kruczek (Detroit, Mich. / Lakeview) in the third doubles flight.

Kruczek had been paired with Tanya Joseph (Northville, Mich. / Northville) all fall. The new tandem lost 2-8 in that flight.

Singles play gave the Warriors their marks however as freshman Alex Poissant (Laval, Que. / Vanier Prep) was a 0-6, 6-1, 6-4 winner at number three singles. Materak was also a winner at the fifth singles spot, winning the first set 6-2 before her opponent had to withdraw due to an injury.

"Manu looked very good in her first outing as a Warrior before her opponent unfortunately had to retire," Snyder said.

Yahsha Moore (West Bloomfield, Mich. / West Bloomfield) fought hard in the top singles flight but in the end suffered a 0-6, 5-7 loss.

"Overall, the team played very well against a good opponent," Snyder said.

The Warriors will next hit the nets down in Florida against Southern New Hampshire University on March 7 at 8:00 a.m.
