South Canton, Ohio - The Wayne State women's tennis team (18-6, 13-1 GLIAC) hit the road to Ohio on Thursday to take on the 35th ranked team nationally in Indiana University of Pennsylvania. The Warriors would come up just short in that match suffering a 3-6 loss after over four hours of play.
WSU would send three singles matches to the full three sets before losing each of those matches.
Alex Poissant (Laval, Que. / Vanier Prep) was especially strong at third singles as she dropped the first set 2-6 and was down 2-5 in the second set before forcing and winning a tiebreaker to send it to a deciding third set. She would end up dropping that set 4-6 but it marked a sign of things to come.
Freshman,
Julia Kamenko (Thornhill, Ont. / Vaughan S.S.) and
Manu Materak (Amberg, Germany / Erasmus-Gymnasium) also fell in three sets in their matches at second and fifth singles respectively. It's marked a frustrating run for the Warriors as they have played a trio of nationally ranked teams this spring and come up just short in each of those matches.
The doubles team of
Yahsha Moore (West Bloomfield, Mich. / West Bloomfield) and
Anne Li Briand (Repentigny, Que. / École Secondaire Félix-Leclerc) was great yet again as they picked up an 8-5 victory at first doubles before each winning their respective singles matches in the first and fourth flights.
The Warrior women will get back at it tomorrow as they square off with West Liberty State College at 11:00 am again in South Canton.
