Canton, Ohio -- The Wayne State University men's tennis squad (12-5 overall, 9-1 GLIAC) won its fifth straight match and moved within one-half game of Northwood (depending on the Timberwolves outcome on Sunday) for the top spot in the GLIAC standings. The Warriors notched an 8-1 triumph over host Malone University (8-17 overall, 1-10 GLIAC) on Sunday.
WSU began the day with a 3-0 advantage after doubles play.
Aman Gill (Windsor, Ont. / Assumption College HS) and
Trey Keating (Troy, Mich.) combined for an 8-6 win at No. 1 doubles, while
Melvin Joseph (Northville, Mich.) and
Michael FitzGerald (Grosse Ile, Mich.) were 8-0 victors at second doubles.
Thomas Ducret (Paris, France) and
Jason Chen (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester Adams) teamed for an 8-1 triumph at No. 3 doubles.
Mohamed Fazyl Kechai (Paris, France / Martin Luther King) retired at first singles due to an injury giving the Pioneers their lone point.
Joseph won a super tiebreaker after splitting the first two sets at No. 2 singles. FitzGerald, Chen,
Jon Groszek (Dearborn Heights, Mich. / Divine Child) and Keating were all straight set winners at third through sixth singles.
Wayne State will conclude regular-season play on Tuesday at Northwood in a match that will decide the top seed for next weekend's GLIAC tournament. If NU wins today they will be 10-0 and WSU 9-1 entering Tuesday's match.
