Men's Tennis Finishes Fourth at GLIAC Tournament

Warriors fall to Ohio Dominican 5-4.

Boxscore

Midland, Mich. -- The Wayne State University men's tennis team (13-8) suffered a 5-4 setback to Ohio Dominican University (13-9) in the third-place match at the 2013 GLIAC Tournament being held at the Midland Community Tennis Center.

WSU fell behind 2-1 after doubles play despite the solid play of Thomas Ducret (Paris, France) and Jason Chen (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester Adams) at the No. 3 doubles flight who posted an 8-1 victory.  In a pivotal match at second doubles, Melvin Joseph (Northville, Mich.) and Michael FitzGerald (Grosse Ile, Mich.) dropped a 9-7 decision with FitzGerald suffering an injury that did not allow him to compete in singles play.

Even without FitzGerald and Mohamed Fazyl Kechai (Paris, France / Martin Luther King) participating in singles, the Warriors won the second through fourth flights.  Ducret was a three-set winner at No. 2 singles, while Joseph won in straight sets at the third flight.  Chen posted a straight-set win at No. 4 singles, a spot he had played only twice before all season.

Jon Groszek (Dearborn Heights, Mich. / Divine Child) played at fifth singles for only the fourth time this year and suffered a 6-1, 6-1 setback with Trey Keating (Troy, Mich.) playing only his third singles match all year at the No. 6 flight.

Wayne State was ranked fourth in the Midwest Region last week and on Tuesday night (8:30 p.m. on NCAA.com), the selection of the 48 teams making it to the NCAA tournament will be released.
