Bay City, Mich. -- The GLIAC announced its All-GLIAC teams on Wednesday and Wayne State University had eight student-athletes honored for their performance this season including four first team selections. The awards were voted on by the league's head coaches.
Catcher
Brad Guenther (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Saline) was selected as the GLIAC Player of the Year and First All-GLIAC First Team. He is the fourth Wayne State student-athlete to receive the award and first since Frank Jeney in 2005. He is a two-time GLIAC Player of the Week. At the end of the regular season he ranked sixth in the GLIAC in batting average (.361), third in hits (57), second in doubles (14), second in slugging percentage (.589), second in walks (33), second in runs (44), third in on-base percentage (.490) fourth in home runs (6) and tied for fifth in RBI (36).
Starting pitcher
Alex Pierse (Clinton Township, Mich. / De La Salle) was selected All-GLIAC First Team after going 7-1 with a 1.89 ERA. He tied for second in the league with seven victories and had the third lowest ERA in the GLIAC. Pierse collected four complete games, three of them were shutouts.
Shortstop
Kenny Davis (Wyoming, Mich. / Lee) was named the All-GLIAC First Team after hitting .307 with 34 runs scored, nine doubles, one triple and two home runs while driving in 15 runs.
Outfielder
Kasey Koster (Portage, Mich. / Central) was WSU's final All-GLIAC First Team selection. Koster hit .352 and led the team with 38 RBI while hitting four home runs and 10 doubles.
Starting pitcher
Ethan Vasiliauskas (South Rockwood, Mich. / Carleton Airport) was an All-GLIAC Second Team selection after going 7-3 with a 3.43 ERA with two complete games and 41 strikeouts in 65.2 innings.
WSU's closer
Clayton Ruch (Pemberville, Ohio / Eastwood) was an All-GLIAC Second Team selection after he collected nine saves in team-high 17 appearances. Ruch also picked up two wins to go with his 1.80 ERA. The nine saves rank second in the GLIAC and third for a single-season in program history.
Second baseman
Jeremy Carrell (St. Clair, Mich.) was named All-GLIAC Honorable Mention after hitting .302 and driving in 21 runs. He also set a single-season record with 19 hit-by-pitches.
Starting pitcher and first baseman
Kyle Zimmerman (Frankfort, Mich.) was also named All-GLIAC Honorable Mention. Zimmerman hit .326 and scored 26 runs while driving in 28 runs. He also sent a single-game record with eight RBI at Urbana on April 9 with including a grand slam and a three-run home run.
