Last season, WSU started GLIAC play 7-0 with wins over Lake Erie, Ashland, Findlay, SVSU, LSSU, Northern Michigan and Michigan Tech.
The opening set was tied at 10-10 following a
Candice Ottey (Ajax, Ont.) kill. A 7-1 WSU run extended the Warriors lead to 17-11. Wayne State would control the remaining points of the first set to collect a 25-18 win.
Heather Weiss (Fort Gratiot, Mich. / Port Huron) collected two service aces before Ottey sealed the victory with a kill.
The Warriors started quickly in the second set and jumped out to a 15-5 lead on a kill from Weiss. The lead remained in the double-digits at 20-10 after a
Kelsey Bonewits (Griffith, Ind.) kill. A Lake Erie service error would end the second set and give WSU a 25-15 win.
However, the Storm would not go quietly as they led 14-11 in the third set. Lake Erie extended its lead to 19-15 before WSU turned it on, finally tying the set at 21-21 during a 6-0 run. Following the run, which was capped by kill from
Madison Reeves (Indianapolis, Ind. / Avon), WSU led 24-21. A poor Lake Erie set closed the book on the Storm and WSU would collect a 25-22 set-three victory and a 3-0 sweep.
Kristen Bulkiewicz (LaSalle, Ont. / Sandwich) led the Green & Gold with 15 kills and 11 digs, collecting her 25th career double-double. Reeves dished out 34 assists. As a team, WSU hit .250 compared to Lake Erie's .164 hitting percentage.
