SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. -- The Wayne State University volleyball team (6-6, 3-1) earned a weekend split with a 3-1 win at Lake Superior (0-8, 0-4) on Saturday afternoon. The Warriors took set one 25-20 and set two 25-22 before the Lakers responded with a 25-21 set-three victory to avoid the sweep. The Green & Gold collected the win with a 25-19 set-four win.

LSSU was the first to 10 points in set number one, leading 10-9. Ellen Oppenheim (St. Joseph, Mich.) tallied a kill to pull the Warriors within a point at 16-15. WSU went on a 4-0 run to take a 21-18 lead and controlled the final points of the set to win 25-20.

Essence Jackson-Jones (Muskegon, Mich.) delivered a kill to put WSU up 10-9 in the second set. A 3-0 LSSU run gave the Lakers a 15-14 lead. A kill from Heather Weiss (Fort Gratiot, Mich. / Port Huron) capped a 3-0 Warrior run and gave WSU a 19-16 lead. Kristen Bulkiewicz (LaSalle, Ont. / Sandwich) gave the Warriors a 25-22 set-two victory with a kill to close the set.

The third set was tied at 10-10, 15-15 and 20-20. The Lakers ended the set on a 5-0 run to win 25-21.

A Bulkiewicz kill gave the Warriors a 10-5 lead to begin the fourth set. WSU extended its lead to 16-10. LSSU would pull within four at 19-15 but the Warriors would hold onto the momentum and win the set 25-19 and the match 3-1.

Bulkiewicz finished with 15 kills while Macy Steenhuysen (Grand Rapids, Mich. / East Kentwood) led the defense with 13 digs. Reeves handed out 36 assists. WSU hit .221 compared to LSSU's .180 hitting percentage. Bulkiewicz collected 30 kills over the weekend and is now in 10th place in program history with 1,074 kills.

Wayne State will play at Findlay on Tuesday at 7:30 PM before opening its home schedule over the weekend.
