GENEVA, Ohio -- The Wayne State University women's swimming and diving team has the lead over eight other teams after the first day Wednesday at the 2014 GLIAC Swimming & Diving Championships, being held at the SPIRE Institute.
WSU, winners of the last four GLIAC titles, won four of the five events in day one of the four-day conference meet. Wayne State earned 262 points during the first day and has a 105-point advantage over second-place Grand Valley (157 points).
After earning a conference title on the one-meter board in 2013, senior
Paige Kortman (Holland, Mich. / Holland) won the three-meter GLIAC diving title Wednesday. She posted a score of 478.95 to win by more than seven points.
Senior
Carol Azambuja (Sao Paulo, Brazil) began her final conference meet in style, breaking school and meet records with her swim in the 50 freestyle. Her time of 22.76 in the 50 freestyle also earned her an NCAA "A" cut qualifying mark.
Sophomore
Elly Maleski (Cedar, Mich. / Traverse City West) placed sixth with a time of 23.85, while freshman
Emily Maraskine (Midland, Mich. / Dow) touched in 24.06 to earn seventh in the 50 freestyle.
Junior
Kristina Novichenko (Seversk, Russia) won a conference title in the 1000 freestyle, finishing with a time of 10:06.96. WSU had four of the top eight swimmers in the 1000 freestyle. Senior
Kelsey Dischler (Macomb, Mich. / Henry Ford II) placed fifth (10:24.79), while sophomore
Veronica Loock (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester) finished seventh (10:33.41) and sophomore
Mallory Moore (West Bloomfield, Mich. / West Bloomfield) was eighth (10:34.93) for the Warriors.
WSU had three of the top eight swimmers in the 200 IM, with all three earning NCAA "B" cut times. Senior
Kayla Scott (Rochester, Mich. / Adams) posted a time of 2:04.53 to place second overall in the 200 IM. Junior
Gloria Martinez Perez (Merida, Spain) finished fifth with a time of 2:05.81, while junior
Kei Cze Prentis (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Utica Eisenhower) was sixth with a time of 2:07.23.
The Warriors had four divers in the top eight in the three-meter finals. Freshman
Elizabeth Rawlings (Armada, Mich. / Romeo) finished third with a score of 432.75, junior
Alex Geddis-McCririe (Brighton, Mich. / Brighton) placed fourth with a score of 427.30, while freshman
Holly Krill (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Portage Central) was eighth with a score of 355.07.
Wayne State capped off the first day by winning the 200 medley relay. The relay squad of Maleski, sophomore
Manuela Ferreira (Ibague, Colombia), Azambuja and Scott combined for a time of 1:42.72.
The Warriors return to the pool Thursday at 10:30 a.m. for preliminary swims. Finals each day are set for 6 p.m.
