Men's Swimming and Diving Takes Over First Place

Geneva, Ohio -- A solid showing on day two of the 2014 GLIAC Championships by the Wayne State University men's swimming and diving program has moved the Warriors into first place.  WSU entered Thursday evening trailing Grand Valley by 4.5 points (187.5-183), but outscored the Lakers 280-250 to grab a 25.5 point edge (463-437.5).

The 200 free relay quartet of sophomore Eric Gensheimer (Farmington, Mich.), junior Lucas Fernandez Vilanova (Valencia, Spain), freshman Juan David Molina Perez (Medellin, Colombia) and senior Cameron Fryzel (Auburn, Mich. / Bay City Western) placed third in a time of 1:23.03.

The Warriors had three of the top eight finishers in the 400 IM as sophomore Jayson Hansen (Grand Blanc, Mich.) placed fifth (3:59.17).  Freshman Mitch Bohr (Novi, Mich. / Walled Lake Western) was seventh (4:04.64) and junior Nick Victor (Chesterfield, Mich. / Anchor Bay) was eighth (4:07.75).  In the consolation finals, sophomore Jack Dischler (Macomb, Mich. / Henry Ford II) was 11th (4:09.86) while senior Jordan Papp (Dearborn, Mich. / Edsel Ford) was 15th (4:15.02).

WSU took second and third place in the 100 fly as freshman Soren Holm (Rodovre, Denmark) and junior Piotr Jachowicz (Lodz, Poland) turned in times of 47.94 and 48.10, respectively.  Fernandez Vilanova was seventh in a time of 49.36.  Senior Calvin Reder (Bay City, Mich. / John Glenn) won the consolation final (50.20), while Gensheimer was 14th (50.73).

Freshman Till Barthel (Hannover, Germany) was second in the 200 free (1:36.75) but managed an "A" cut time.  Senior Kristian Larsen (Frederiksberg, Denmark) was fifth (1:38.32) while Fryzel was eighth (1:40.79).  In the consolation finals of the 200 free, Molina Perez was 10th (1:40.82) with junior Kyle Taylor (Holland, Mich.) placing 13th (1:43.69).

Wayne State took the top three places in the one-meter diving event.  Junior Dylan Szegedi (Oregon, Ohio / Toledo St. Francis de Sales) won his second one-meter GLIAC title with a score of 531.50.  He also won the one-meter diving event in 2012 and placed second last year.

Junior Kevin White (Warren, Mich. / Cousino) was second (447.20), while freshman Adam Littell (Holland, Mich. / Hamilton) was third with a score of 436.05.

Wayne State finished off the evening's festivities by winning the 400 medley relay in a time of 3:13.41, which broke both the meet and GLIAC records.  Molina Perez led off the relay and was followed by Jachowicz, Holm and Larsen.

The 2014 GLIAC Championships will continue on Friday and conclude on Saturday.
