Geneva, Ohio -- The Wayne State University women's swimming and diving increased its lead over the rest of the GLIAC field Thursday evening by totaling 196 points. WSU entered the finals with a 105-point margin vs. Grand Valley, and extended its lead to 126 points (458-332).
The Warriors began Thursday evening with a convincing win in the 200 medley eclisping the previous GLIAC Championship mark set three years ago by 0.34 with a time of 1:32.84. The old record of 1:33.18 was established by the WSU contingent of
Carol Azambuja, Ana Gonzalez Pena,
Cristina Busquets Garcia and
Sara Franklin. The new record holding quartet consists of senior
Kayla Scott (Rochester, Mich. / Adams), junior
Gloria Martinez Perez (Merida, Spain / IES Carolina Coronado), freshman
Emily Maraskine (Midland, Mich. / Dow) and senior
Carol Azambuja (Sao Paulo, Brazil / Colegio Objetivo).
Junior
Kristina Novichenko (Seversk, Russia / Saint-Petersburg) placed second in the 400 IM with a "B" qualifying time of 4:21.50, while classmate
Kei Cze Prentis (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Utica Eisenhower) was sixth (4:30.92), Sophomore
Veronica Loock (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester) won the consolation finals in a time of 4:31.89 with senior
Kelsey Dischler (Macomb, Mich. / Henry Ford II) placing 10th (4:33.85). Junior
Marissa Swartz (Washington, Mich. / Romeo) finished 14th (4:37.54).
Martinez Perez placed third in the 100 fly (56.34), while Maleski and Scott were sixth and seventh, respectively with times of 56.85 and 57.19. All three WSU times were "B" qualifiers.
Azambuja won the 200 free (1:50.40) with freshman
Emily Heitchue (Royal Oak, Mich.) finishing 11th (1:54.46).
The 400 medley relay team of Maleski, Scott, Novichenko and Martinez Perez won in a GLIAC Championship meet record time of 3:44.17.
The 2014 GLIAC Championships will continue on Friday and conclude on Saturday.
