GENEVA, Ohio -- The Wayne State University men's swimming and diving team expanded its lead Friday at the 2014 GLIAC Swimming & Diving Championships, extending its advantage to 68 points over Grand Valley.
With one day to go at the conference meet, the Warriors have 704.5 points, while GVSU is in second place at 636.5 points. WSU had a 25-point advantage heading into day three Friday, but gained a larger lead with strong performances in all five events.
Junior
Piotr Jachowicz (Lodz, Poland) broke his own GLIAC and WSU varsity record with his winning time of 53.21 in the 100 breaststroke. Sophomore
Jayson Hansen (Grand Blanc, Mich.) followed his teammate in second place in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 54.73.
Junior
Nick Victor (Chesterfield, Mich. / Anchor Bay) tied for seventh place in the 100 breaststroke finals, finishing with a time of 56.55. Sophomore
Aryell Pasternak (Sterling Hts., Mich. / De La Salle) placed 12th in the 100 breaststroke earning a time of 58.05 as four members earned points in the event for WSU.
Wayne State had four of the eight swimmers in the 100 backstroke championship finals. Freshman
Till Barthel (Hannover, Germany) finished third in the 100 backstroke (48.36) to lead the Warriors. Freshman
Soren Holm (Rodovre, Denmark) placed fifth (50.01), freshman
Juan David Molina Perez (Medellin, Colombia) followed in sixth (50.05) and junior
Lucas Fernandez Vilanova (Valencia, Spain) was seventh (50.18) for WSU in the 100 backstroke finals.
Freshman
Zach Zylstra (Zeeland, Mich. / Zeeland East) finished second in the 100 backstroke "B" finals, earning ninth overall in a time of 51.60.
WSU was also well-represented in the "A" finals of the 200 butterfly. The Warriors earned sixth, seventh and eighth place overall in the event. Senior
Calvin Reder (Bay City, Mich. / John Glenn) was sixth with a time of 1:50.68, Holm placed seventh in 1:50.79, while
Mitch Bohr (Novi, Mich. / Walled Lake Western) touched the wall in 1:52.49 to finish eighth.
Sophomore
Eric Gensheimer (Farmington, Mich. / Farmington) was the fourth Warrior to earn points in the 200 butterfly, as he competed in the "B" finals, placing 13th with a time of 1:57.30.
The Warriors had five different swimmers earn points in the 500 freestyle. Junior
Kyle Taylor (Holland, Mich. / Holland) placed third with a time of 4:36.64. Sophomore
Jack Dischler (Macomb, Mich. / Henry Ford II) finished sixth in a time of 4:39.24.
In the "B" finals of the 500 freestyle, senior
Kristian Larsen (Frederiksberg, Denmark) swam an NCAA "B" cut time of 4:35.06 on his way to the victory and ninth place overall. Senior
Jordan Papp (Dearborn, Mich. / Edsel Ford) finished 11th in a time of 4:40.91, while senior
Cameron Fryzel (Auburn, Mich. / Bay City Western) placed 15th in 4:46.87.
Wayne State won the 800 freestyle relay with a meet-record time of 6:34.45. The relay squad of Barthel, Larsen, Hansen and Jachowicz beat the Grand Valley team by more than one second to earn an NCAA "B" cut time.
The 2014 GLIAC Swimming & Diving Championships finish Saturday. Preliminaries are set for 10:30 a.m. with the finals at 6 p.m. The Warriors are aiming for their fourth straight GLIAC title.
