Women's Swimming & Diving Extends Lead at GLIAC Championships

Record-breaking performances highlight day three as WSU has 206-point lead heading into final day

GENEVA, Ohio
-- The Wayne State University women's swimming and diving team has led after each day at the 2014 GLIAC Swimming & Diving Championships and that didn't change Friday, as the Warriors extended their lead after Friday's finals.

The Warriors have a 206-point lead following Friday's events. WSU has 743 points, while second place Grand Valley has accumulated 537 points heading into the final day Saturday at the GLIAC Championships. Ten teams total are competing at the four-day conference meet.

WSU had several top record-breaking performances on Friday.

Senior Kayla Scott (Rochester, Mich. / Adams) broke her own school and GLIAC records with her conference title in the 100 breaststroke. Her time of 1:01.33 on Friday is the fastest time in Division II this season to date.

Junior Kristina Novichenko (Seversk, Russia) broke a GLIAC meet record with her win in the 200 butterfly. Novichenko broke the two-minute mark for the second time this season, posting a time of 1:59.94 on her way to the conference title.

Senior Paige Kortman (Holland, Mich. / Holland) completed the sweep of the GLIAC diving titles, winning the one-meter event with a score of 454.05. She also won the three-meter event on Wednesday. Kortman won Friday's conference title by 2.70 points over Grand Valley's Taylor Wiercinski.

Freshman Elizabeth Rawlings (Armada, Mich. / Romeo) finished third on the one-meter board with a score of 425.45, while sophomore Alex Geddis-McCririe (Brighton, Mich. / Brighton) placed fourth with a score of 413.55.

Senior Carol Azambuja (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and sophomore Elly Maleski (Cedar, Mich. / Traverse City West) finished 1-2 in the 100 backstroke. Azambuja touched the wall with an NCAA "A" cut time of 54.80, while Maleski was .99 seconds behind in 55.79.

Freshman Emily Maraskine (Midland, Mich. / Dow) and junior Kei Cze Prentis (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Utica Eisenhower) were also in the 100 backstroke finals, placing fifth and seventh, respectively. Maraskine had a time of 56.51, while Prentis earned a time of 56.67.

Sophomore Manuela Ferreira (Ibague, Colombia) placed third behind Scott in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:02.60. Sophomore Hannah Loesch (Harbor Springs, Mich.) was seventh (1:04.30) and freshman Emily Heitchue (Royal Oak, Mich. / Royal Oak) placed 11th (1:05.81) in the 100 breaststroke for WSU.

Wayne State had two swimmers in the 500 freestyle finals, as senior Kelsey Dischler (Macomb, Mich. / Henry Ford II) earned an NCAA "B" cut time with her fifth place finish (5:04.88). Sophomore Veronica Loock (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester) placed sixth in a time of 5:05.79, also swimming under the NCAA "B" cut qualifying standard.

Sophomore Mallory Moore (West Bloomfield, Mich. / West Bloomfield) won the 500 freestyle "B" finals, earning ninth place overall with an NCAA "B" cut time of 5:05.62. Senior Alycen Wiacek (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester) finished 13th (5:10.30) and senior Michelle Adamic (Chesterfield, Mich. / L'Anse Creuse North) placed 15th (5:13.42) in the 500 freestyle for WSU.

Wayne State capped off a strong performance Friday with a meet record in the 800 freestyle relay. The quartet of Prentis, junior Gloria Martinez Perez (Merida, Spain), Heitchue and Azambuja posted a time of 7:26.34 to place first by more than six seconds.

WSU is seeking its fifth straight GLIAC Championship on Saturday.
