DETROIT -- The Wayne State University volleyball program (14-11, 9-5 GLIAC) was unable to secure an important victory against Grand Valley State (15-10, 10-4 GLIAC) on Saturday afternoon, falling in five sets inside the Matthaei.  The victory gives the Lakers sole possession of first place within the GLIAC South Division.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Warriors led the opening set 5-2 and a Julia Malewicz (Macomb, Mich. / Utica Academy for International Studies / Henry Ford II) service ace extended WSU's lead to 8-4.  The Warriors used a 7-1 run to take a 19-10 lead.  The rally included two kills from Malewicz and a point from Grace Frazee (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Grand Rapids Christian).  The Lakers would storm back tot ie the set at 24-24 and 25-25 before WSU won the set 27-25 a kill by Madelyn Krenz (Chenoa, Ill. / Prairie Central) and a combo block from Frazee and Malewicz.

- Michelle Asiedu (Holland, Ohio / Springfield) and Malewicz teamed up for a block early in the second set to put Wayne State on top 5-2.  GVSU led 12-11 later in the set and the Warriors would be unable to overcome the Lakers down the stretch as the visitors would tie the match at 1-1 with a 25-18 victory.

- The Warriors led 6-4 on an Asiedu kill in the third set.  WSU trailed by one at 12-11 but GVSU would control the momentum the rest of the game and win 25-18.

- Hailey Richardson (New Boston, Mich. / Huron) kept the Green & Gold close at 7-6 with a kill early in the fourth set.  Richardson continued to have the hot hand and gave WSU a 17-15 lead later in the set.  A GVSU attack error gave WSU A 23-19 lead and the Warriors would win 25-22 to force a fifth set.

- The Lakers took five of the first seven points to lead the fifth set 5-2.  The Warriors ignited the crowd by tying the set at 6-6 but GVSU would respond by winning the next two points.  Three straight Laker errors gave WSU a 9-8 lead but GVSU used a 5-0 run to lay claim to a 13-9 lead.  Wayne State could only muster one more points as GVSU won 15-10.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
- In her first collegiate start, Malewicz led WSU with 17 kills, while Richardson tallied 16.  Breault dished out 52 assists, while Ellie Rodriguez (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Catholic Central) led the defense with 27 digs.

UP NEXT
- Wayne State will host Davenport on Friday, Nov. 10th at 7:00 p.m. before closing out the regular season versus Purdue Northwest on Nov. 11th at 2:00 p.m.  The Warriors will recognize their four-member senior class prior to first serve.
