Three Warriors Named To CoSIDA Women's At-Large Academic All-District Team

Ferreira, Rawlings and Sobczak recognized for academic and athletic accomplishments.

DETROIT -- Three Wayne State University female student-athletes have been voted to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Women's At-Large Team.

Redshirt senior swimmer Manuela Ferreira (Ibague, Colombia), senior diver Elizabeth Rawlings (Armada, Mich. / Romeo) and redshirt senior fencer Zuzanna Sobczak (Gdansk, Poland) were three of the 13 female student-athletes to earn CoSIDA Academic All-District Women's At-Large First Team honors.

The At-Large program includes the following sports:  Women's Beach Volleyball, Women's Bowling, Women's Crew/Rowing, Men's and Women's Fencing, Women's Field Hockey, Men's and Women's Golf, Men's and Women's Gymnastics, Men's and Women's Ice Hockey, Men's and Women's Lacrosse, Men's and Women's Rifle, Men's and Women's Skiing, Men's and Women's Swimming, Men's and Women's Tennis, Men's Volleyball, Men's and Women's Water Polo and Men's Wrestling.

Each institution in District 4 (GLIAC, GLVC, GMAC and Oakland City [Independent]) can nominate up to four individuals per gender for At-Large consideration.

Ferreira was a recipient of a 2016-17 GLIAC Winter Sports Commissioner's Award for academic and athletic excellence.  Ferreira was a three-time First Team All-American in 2017 as she swam the second leg on both the 200 medley relay team that finished third and the sixth place 400 medley relay.  Individually, she took fifth in the 100 breast.  Ferreira swam the second leg of both first-place relay teams at the GLIAC Championships in the 200 medley and the 400 medley and was victorious in the 100 breast.  A chemical engineering major, Ferreira was named to the Athletic Director's Honor Roll (term gpa 3.5+) all eight semesters..

Rawlings was a two-time First Team All-American in 2017 as she finished third in the one-meter diving event and was the runner-up in the three-meter diving event.  At the GLIAC Championships, Rawlings was voted GLIAC Female Diver of the Year after winning the three-meter board and taking second in the one-meter diving event.   A pre-nursing major, Rawlings was named to the Athletic Director's Honor Roll (term gpa 3.5+) four times and the Coach's Honor Roll (term gpa 3.0-3.49) twice.  Rawlings was the 2015 CSCAA Female Diver of the Year after winning the three-meter diving competition with a national record score of 555.70 and finished second on the one-meter board with a school record of 506.85.

Sobczak recently received the Athletic Deans' Award from the College of Engineering for having the highest cumulative grade-point average of all student-athletes in that college.  She  finished ninth in the nation at the NCAA Championships (3/26) with a 12-11 record (+15 / 88-73 in touches) to earn Honorable Mention All American accolades for the third consecutive season.  Sobczak qualified all four years for the NCAA Collegiate Fencing Championships.  A civil engineering major, she was named to the Athletic Director's Honor Roll (term gpa 3.5+) all seven semesters, including four 4.00 terms. Sobczak is also a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).

CoSIDA Release

CoSIDA Academic All-District™ Women's At-Large Team Released

The 2016-17 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District™ Women's At-Large Team has been released to recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom.

The Academic All-District™ teams include the student-athletes listed on the following pages and are divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada.  This is the sixth year of the expanded Academic All-America® program as CoSIDA moved from recognizing a University Division (Division I) and a College Division (all non-Division I) and has doubled the number of scholar-athletes honored. The expanded teams include NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II and NCAA Division III participants, while the College Division Academic All-America® Team combines NAIA, Canadian and two-year schools.

The Division II and III Academic All-America® program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division II and III national governance structures, to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2016-17 DII and DIII Academic All-America® teams program.

First-team Academic All-District™  honorees advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America® Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America® honorees will be selected later this month.
