Over the next couple of weeks we will continue previewing each position on the 2017 Wayne State University football team with each position coach highlighting their respective units.
Jeff Reardon, Quarterbacks Coach, is featured in this segment.
Junior
D.J. Zezula (Clarkston, Mich.), an Honorable Mention All-GLIAC selection in 2016, has started the last 21 games compiling a 13-8 record. He enters his third season as the signal caller with the best marks in school history in passing efficiency rating (142.4 - min. 105 attempts) and yards per pass attempt (8.5 - min. 105 attempts), as well as the highest yards per completion mark (14.9) of anyone in WSU history with at least 120 completions. He ranks first in program history in total offense per game (181.6), second in passing yards per game (168.8), completion percentage (57.2 - min. 105 attempts) and total offense per play (6.80), fifth in passing touchdowns (28), sixth in passing yards (3,713), eighth in both completions (250) and total offense (3,996), 11th in passing attempts (437), and tied-for-11th in touchdowns responsible for (32).
Heading into the 2017 fall camp, Zezula will be pushed for playing time by redshirt sophomore
Dakota Kupp (Waterford, Mich. / Mott), redshirt freshman
Jake AmRhein (South Elgin, Ill.) and fifth-year senior
Trevor Van Tubbergen (Holland, Mich. / West Ottawa).
Kupp, AmRhein and Van Tubbergen have combined for three collegiate completions in limited playing time. Kupp played in four games a year ago, while Van Tubbergen and AmRhein did not see any game action last season.
Also in the mix at quarterback is redshirt sophomore
Christian Klink (Olmsted Falls, Ohio / Parma Heights Holy Name), who had a completion against Lake Erie in his lone appearance in 2016.
Three of the five quarterbacks earned Academic Honors for the Winter 2017 term with both AmRhein and Van Tubbergen having over a 3.5 term GPA, while Zezula received Coach's Honor Roll accolades.
