Second Annual Baseball Home Run Derby a Soaring Success

DETROIT -- The Second Annual Wayne State University baseball home run derby fundraiser sponsored by UHY Cares was on Saturday, Oct. 9th at Harwell Field and graduate student Hunter DeLanoy (Hartland, Mich.) defeated Davis Graham (Grosse Pointe, Mich. / Grosse Pointe South) in the championship round.  Speaking of champions, the Taylor North Little League World Series champions were the featured guests at the derby.

The event raised $20,255, which will go towards supporting the 2021-2022 baseball program and approaching NCAA season.  There were ten teams with designated hitters and those teams solicited money for additional time at the plate.  The teams were entered into the Justin Kelly and Jon Weisman Brackets.  Justin Kelly is is the program's career home run leader after surpassing Hall of Famer Jon Weisman during the 2019 season.

"Last year we developed this Home Run Derby concept and were excited with the initial success," said head coach Ryan Kelley.  "The second annual derby was even more thrilling, and we look forward to building this event into the future.  Our student-athletes performed tremendously, driving home this initiative.  I would like to thank UHY Cares for their title sponsorship leadership.  In addition, it was enjoyable having the Taylor North Little League Champions with us at Harwell Field.  Combining Little League and NCAA players in Midtown Detroit for an impressive day of baseball was an extremely positive experience.  A sincere thank you to all WSU Baseball families, friends and alumni who contributed to this activity in support of our student-athletes."
