Tolmich, a 1937 NCAA track and field hurdles All-American, is now a Chicago, Illinois resident. He was a National AAU hurdles champion six times in 1937, 1939, 1940, and 1941 and set 15 USA (world) indoor hurdles marks in the same four years.

A Detroit native, he graduated from Central High School and was a tennis numerals winner at WSU before switching to track. As a junior, he won all 27 dual meet starts which enabled him to be selected for a 1937 AAU trip to England, Italy, and Germany and the 1938 AAU trip to Japan. He had top three finishes at the MSU Relays, Central Collegiate Conference Meet, Texas Relays, Penn Relays, Armour Relays, and Michigan Collegiate Championships.

Tolmich still holds one outdoor and three indoor hurdles records at WSU. Third in the 1937 NCAA Meet, he was also on the National AAU All-American Teams from 1938-1941.

He has two WSU academic degrees.
