Art Johnson, a four-year basketball letterwinner (1988-89 through 1991-92) at Wayne State, has been selected for induction into WSU's Athletic Hall of Fame.
As a senior co-captain, he helped guide the squad to a GLIAC regular-season title (12-4 record) and berths in the GLIAC championship game as well as the NCAA Great Lakes Regional title game (Sweet Sixteen). Johnson was named to the GLIAC All-Tournament team. He had the team's best three-point shooting percentage (42.3), making 55 shots from beyond the arc.
Johnson started all 58 games over his final two seasons, earning Honorable Mention All-GLIAC honors both seasons. He completed his career with 88 starts in 111 games. His games played total still ranks fourth all-time at WSU.
In his junior season, he led the Green and Gold in scoring (15.8 points per game, 427 total points), while also serving as team co-captain. In addition, he had a team-high 138 assists, 65 steals, 63 three-pointers made and 152 three-pointers attempted. Both three-point totals were WSU single-season records at that time. Off the court, he received the School of Business Manufacturer's Bank Scholarship Award.
During the 1989-90 campaign, Johnson finished second on the squad in scoring (11.0 ppg) and assists (107), while leading the team in steals (45).
Three times during his career he led the squad in assists, completing his career as Wayne State's all-time assist leader (434).
Johnson also owns the WSU single-game record for most free throws made (22) and most free throw attempts (24), both set against Lake Superior in 1991-92.
His 1,215 career points ranked seventh on the WSU all-time list at the time of his graduation, while his 272 free throws made ranked eighth in 1992.
He also served as a graduate assistant coach for the WSU basketball team in 1994-95 after spending the previous season in a similar role at Ashland University.
Johnson graduated from WSU in 1993 with a degree in corporate finance and completed a master's in business administration from Ashland in 1995.
The Canton, Ohio, native graduated from GlenOak High School in 1988 and is currently a vice president of Wachovia Bank serving as a risk advisor of business, corporate and industrial risk management.
He resides in Charlotte, N.C., with his wife Nita and their three children, Kaleb (4), Loren (3) and Seth (1).
