Goyette, a native of Detroit and graduate of Harper Woods Bishop Gallagher HS, is another in a long line of Wayne State athletes who have distinguished themselves and the University in swimming. She is an Olympic Gold Medalist, the third in Wayne State history, and Goyette is the only woman swimmer ever to win four-consecutive national breaststroke titles. Also, she was a five-time NAAU indoor breaststroke champion, and a four-time national intercollegiate breaststroke champion. Goyette held the national record in the 200- and 250-yard breaststroke events, and has a member of the 400-meter medley relay team that set the world record at the 1964 Toyko Olympics; she attained the highest honor any amateur athlete can receive. Throughout high school and during her undergraduate career at Wayne State, Goyette swam for the Golden Lions Swim Club in East Detroit, under coach Roy Pouliot. By the time she entered the University in 1964, Goyette had already won her Olympic Gold Medal and two of her four-straight NAAU breaststroke national titles, placing her among the most successful women swimmers in the USA. At the Toyko Games, Goyette's 400-meter medley relay team won the gold with a world record time of 4:33.9. In 1966, Goyette's times in the 200-yard breaststroke at the NAAU meet and 250-yard breaststroke at the WNCAA meet were American records. She swam at 2:25.6 in the 200-yard event, and 3:09.1 in the 250-yard breaststroke. That same year Goyette also captured the WNCAA national title in the 50-yard breaststroke with a 32.4 time, a personal-best for her. An AAU and NCAA All-American in 1965 and 1966, Goyette's own exploits helped Wayne State finish third both years in the WNCAA national championships. In her last year of competitive swimming, 1967, Goyette attended the 1967 World Student Games in the same location where she won her gold medal three years previous, Toyko. At the Games Goyette won three more titles, individually the 100-and 200-meter breaststrokes, and as a member of the 400-meter medley relay team. Goyette's best performance during her career include breast-stroke, 50-yard, 32.4; 100-yard,1:08; 200-yard, 2:25.6 (American record); 250-yard, 3:09.1 (American record); and the 400-meter medley relay, 4:33.9 (World record). Goyette was a member of four AAU sponsored All-Star swimming teams that traveled to Peru, England, France, Spain, Portugal, Monaco, New Zealand, the Soviet Union, and Poland. The highlight of the 1965 tour was when Goyette and her teammates lunched with Princess Grace at the Castle in Monaco. Besides swimming, Goyette was also involved in other campus activities during her days at Wayne State , including being selected to the WSU homecoming court in 1966. Goyette graduated from Wayne State in 1973 with a Bachelor in Textiles and Fashion Merchandising. Though currently she in an account executive with WXYT-Radio in Southfield, Mich., previously Goyette worked with Hudson's as a buyer for several years, her last assignment being buyer for pre-teen apparel. Cynthia Goyette Shroeder and her husband Bill, reside in St. Clair Shores, Mich. Both are active outdoorists, enjoying water skiing, snow skiing, and sailing.
