Edward O. Spence lettered in both track and football during the mid 20s at City College of Detroit. Spence was an outstanding hurdler and captained the 1928 track team under Hall of Fame Coach, David Holmes. In 1926 and 1927, Spence was the NCAA Low Hurdles Champion. His time of 23.1 in the event set an NCAA Meet Record and gained Spence All-American recognition. That 23.1 time still stands as a WSU low hurdles record. In 1926, Spence showed his versatility by winning the High Hurdles Championship at the National Relays which were held at the University of Illinois. His academic prowess was exhibited when he was named to the Collegiate Honor Roll in 1926-27. Also in 1926-27, Spence was named to the AAU Collegiate All-American Team. While also attending the City College of Detroit, Spence found time to play offensive and defensive tackle for the football team. Spence retired to Lauderdale Lakes, Florida.
