Elmer "Buddy" Coleman, three-time track letterman, in 1949 equaled the World Indoor Track record for 70 yards with a time of 7.0 seconds. He anchored the WSU 440-and 880-yard relay teams to victories at the prestigious Penn and Western Ontario Relays.
Their 880-yard relay time of 1:26.0 is still a WSU record, as is the 440-yard relay team which won the Penn Relays with a time of 41.7 seconds. That team consisted of anchorman Coleman, with Leon Wingo, and WSU Hall of Fame inductees Lorenzo Wright (1976) and Irving Petross (1982).
While competing for the Detroit Police in 1955, he defeated then world-record holder Jim Golliday in the 100-yard dash with a time of 9.6 seconds.
