Bice, a native of Detroit and graduate of Birmingham Groves HS, lettered two seasons in men's swimming in 1979 and 1980. During his two-year Tartar career, Bice earned nine NCAA Division II All-America citations, ranking him among the top swimmers in WSU history.
An outstanding backstroke swimmer, Bice nearly won the 100 backstroke event at the 1979 NCAA-II national meet, losing out to Oakland's Mark Doyle by 23/100th of a second. Bice's time was 52.68, which still stands today as the Tartars' varsity record.
Earlier that season Bice handed Doyle his only collegiate loss in the 100 back. Doyle was a four-year NCAA -II national champion in the event.
In the 1979 national meet Bice also earned All-America recognition as part of two relay squads. WSU finished sixth in the 400 medley relay and 11th in the 400 freestyle relay. The Tartars finished ninth in the 1979 meet.
At the 1980 NCAA-II national championships Bice earned six All-America citations, three in individual competition and three as a member of a relay squad. His individual finishes were third in the 100 back, seventh in the 50 free, and 12th in the 100 free. With Bice as a member of each relay squad, the Tartars were fifth in the 400 medley relay, sixth in the 800 free relay, and 10th in the 400 free relay.
During his two-year Wayne career, Bice served as the team's captain both seasons. At one point Bice went 21 straight dual meets in his entered events without a loss.
Besides his 100 back varsity record, Bice also still holds the Tartars' records for the 50 free (21.31, 1980) and 200 back (1:58.55, 1979), and the 400 medley relay squad (3:30,91) which he was a part of in 1979.
Bice came to Wayne State from Groves High School via Division I Wake Forest University. A highly successful swimmer at Groves, where he earned prep All-America status all four years, Bice was recruited to Wake Forest, where he lettered the 1976 and 1977 seasons.
During his sophomore season Bice competed in the Athletic Coast Conference championship meet, finishing third in the 100 back. Bice was named the Demon Deacons' MVP both seasons, and he co-captained the 1977 squad.
After the 1977 season, Wake Forest dropped swimming, forcing Bice to change schools to continue his athletic career. He chose Wayne State because of its strong Economics program, in which he received his Bachelor of Science degree in 1981.
Bice was a competitor for the 1980 U.S. Olympic Team, missing the trials by 50/100th of a second in the 100 back with a time of 52.4. He continued to swim competitively for two years after finishing his eligibility at Wayne, breaking two state of Michigan master's records before retiring in 1982.
After graduating from Wayne, Bice began a career as an investment counselor. Currently he is vice president of Investments in the Birmingham office of Dean Witter, Reynolds Broker. For nine years, from 1985-94, Bice was vice president of Investments for Prudential Securities.
Bice is a member of the Endowment Board and Planning Giving Committee of the Karmonos Cancer Foundation in Detroit, and for the past seven years has been giving daily stock market reports on WDET-FM Radio in Detroit.
Bice and his wife, Wendy, reside in Bloomfield Hills, Mich. They are parents of three children, Abigail, Jacob and Emily.
