Catcher Greg Brecht set career marks for home runs (15), doubles (23), total bases (194), RBI (83), and sacrifice flies (9). He is now on-deck to join the Wayne State Athletic Hall of Fame on February 28, 2004. Brecht was a four-year letterwinner for the Tartars from 1973-1976. He played three different positions on the diamond and was a three-year middle-of-the-lineup presence for WSU. Due to an injury he moved to leftfield in his junior season and posted a .342 batting average to go along with his four home runs, 22 RBI, and his team-leading 22 walks. Brecht was named to the 1975 NCAA College Division Honorable Mention All-American team and was a member of the District IV All-Stars Second Team. In his senior season, Brecht set season marks for home runs (7), doubles (15), extra base hits (23), at bats (150), games (47), innings (350) and shared the RBI mark at (32) as the mainstay behind the plate for WSU. For his efforts he was named to the first ever All-GLIAC baseball team. The Tartars finished as conference runners-up, while posting an impressive 14-2 mark against Division I schools. "To receive recognition of this level, considering the many fine athletes who have participated in athletic programs at WSU, is an honor for which I am deeply grateful. I am deeply indebted to Wayne State, in particular to the athletic staff at the time, for the opportunity to have played there for four years. The efforts of the coaching staff have never been forgotten. They are years I remember fondly," Brecht remarked. He earned his bachelor's of science degree in education from WSU in 1977. Brecht also received a BS in engineering technology from Lawrence Technical University in 1990. A 1972 Detroit Austin graduate, Brecht, and his wife, Michelle, live in Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich., and have four children, Celeste, Karl, Candace and Charlotte.
