Harald Bauder, one of the most successful fencers in Wayne State University history, had more than just high athletic achievements at Wayne State. The 1992 NCAA men's epée fencing champion was also on the National Dean's List in 1991 and 1992. Bauder, a native of Germany, was a two-time first team All-American (1992-93), winning the title his sophomore season and placing fourth in 1993. In his final year, Bauder earned second team All-American honors with a fifth-place finish. He capped off his career by being named Outstanding Fencer by both coaches and participants at the NCAA Division I Championships in 1994. At the Midwest Intercollegiate Championships, Bauder three-peated as the epée champion from 1992-94. He was also a member of the WSU epée squad that finished third in the nation. "Coming to Wayne State gave me the opportunity to not only fence, but also focus on academics and succeed in both and opened an academic career path," said Bauder. Bauder completed his undergrad in geography and urban studies in just three years, graduating magna cum laude in1993 and earned his master's degree the following year. That same year, Bauder, a four-time member of the Athletic Director's Honor Roll, was awarded an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship. Bauder was a finalist for the prestigious Wayne State Donnelly Award that is given annually to the man and woman at graduation who have been judged as having made the most outstanding contributions to the University in the areas of student activities, leadership and service. Now an assistant professor of geography at the University of Guelph, Bauder lives with his wife, Karen, and their 13-month-old son, Cassiel.
