John M. Hazely, a great all-around athlete, won seven letters while excelling in football and baseball. He ranks fourth on the all-time WSU rushing list with 1,517 yards. He is second on the WSU scoring list with 166 points. For three seasons, 1947-1949, he led WSU in rushing, total offense, and scoring. For three seasons, he was selected the football team's Most Valuable Player. On defense, he ranks third on the all-time career interception leader list with 15 for 216 return yards. He also captained the football team for two seasons. Hazely was also a three-time baseball letterwinner, who led the team in hitting in 1950 with a .357 average. He was football teammates with Irving Petross, a WSU Hall of Fame Inductee in 1982 and Elmer "Buddy" Coleman, a WSU Hall of Fame Inductee in 1983. He also coached and taught at Detroit Mumford High School. He began in 1968 at Detroit Mumford and coached for 26 seasons.
